Here's 8 reasons why dance is good for us:
It's a workout.
You have no idea how hard an advanced dance class is until you experience it yourself. It's definitely a workout. If you don't believe me, just look at how muscular a dancer's legs and core are. Not to mention, we stand with our entire body weight completely on our toes, so that builds strength in the feet, ankles, and calves.
It teaches you to learn quickly.
In an advanced class, 30 seconds to a minute is how long you have to learn a combination, before being expected to perform it correctly and gracefully. Not to mention, there's usually about 10-15 combinations in a class.
It makes us great listeners.
In a dance class, you've got to listen constantly. If you zone out for ten seconds, you'll miss half the combination or corrections.
It trains you to never give up.
As a dancer, giving up isn't an option. Excuses aren't okay. At my studio, saying "I can't" isn't allowed. Even if it's impossible to perform perfectly, you're expected to at least try your best.
The key to dance is being able to count music. That's how you stay on beat and perform as a group. If you're off the counts, whether in a group or a solo, it'll never look as good.
It helps us tune into our bodies.
The only thing you need to dance is yourself. Your body is your tool. If you want to dance well, you have to take care of yourself.
It uses our creative side.
Dance is an art; a creation we can make without anything but ourselves. We have to get creative to figure out how our art looks best.
It teaches us to work with others.
Taking classes or performing with a group teaches us the importance of teamwork and working together.
We have to think ahead.
You can't stop in the middle of the combination to remember what move is next. Dance is all about being 4 counts ahead.
